The Andrew Johnson Building opened in 1930 as an upscale hotel in downtown Knoxville.  Celebrities such as Liberace, Betty Grable and Hank Williams, Sr. stayed here.  The building has had several owners throughout time, one being R. J. Reynolds.

Knox County purchased the Andrew Johnson Building in 1991 and it became the administrative headquarters for the Knox County Schools.
