Proposed action
Pedestrian bridge across French Broad River
Location
Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge, French Broad River, River
Mile 15.6, Knox County, Tennessee
Description
The proposed work consists of installing a bridge across the
French Broad River to provide pedestrian access between two
areas of the Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge separated by the
river. The construction would require the placement of nine
piers in the river, one on each bank and two bridge
abutments. The bank to bank distance of the bridge would be
950 feet, and the decks would have a one foot clearance
above the 100 year flood elevation of 855.51 feet above sea
level. The exact construction methods have not been
determined at this time.
This project would be funded by the Knox County Division of
Parks and Recreation, the State of Tennessee, and the U.S.
Federal Highway Administration and is managed by the Public
Building Authority of Knox County and the City of Knoxville
(PBA). Permits would be required from the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers, Tennessee Valley Authority, and State of
Tennessee. TVA has prepared a Draft Environmental
Assessment (DEA) on the project. The DEA will be available
at all Knox County public libraries for review. It will
also be located on the PBA webpage
www.ktnpba.org and TVA webpage
http://www.tva.com/environment/reports/7islands/. A
public hearing will be held on November 7, 2007, at 5:30 in
the City County Building Small Assembly Room, located 400
Main Street, Knoxville, TN 37902 to allow the public to
voice their opinions of the proposed action.
