Harriet Tubman Park Improvements

Background

Project Description

in late 2018, Knoxville opened the Change Center directly across the street from Harriet Tubman Park increasing the visibility and creating new opportunities for use of this public space.

With the park already in use for some community based programming such as a tennis program, the City of Knoxville provided capital funding with a goal to provide a permanent restroom facility and ADA improvements for park access.  Separate funding from the city will also provide for the four tennis courts to be resurfaced.

Designs have been completed by Design Innovation Architects and permits are now approved. Construction lead by general contractor Johnson & Galyon Construction began on March 30.  Progress photos can be seen below.

Tennis Court Resurfacing - Completed

In late 2019 Sports Surface Pros was awarded the contract to resurface the four courts last fall but was unable to initiate the work due to low overnight temperatures and rain. Travel restrictions due to Coronovirus further delayed work in 2020. Crews have now completed resurfacig all 4 courts.

Current Impacts

This project has been completed and any construction-related impacts resolved. Items listed below summarize impacts seen throughout the construction period for reference only and are not current.

Construction is anticipated to begin on or about March 30. During construction, the central sidewalk and core of the park around the main gazebo will be closed.

  • Water Fountain—The park’s water fountain was removed last winter as part of the normal winterization procedure.  The old fountain will not be reinstalled this year as the project includes a new fountain adjacent to the restroom building.  Patrons are encouraged to bring their own water as the park will not have a water fountain
